How to rehearse chamber music (or just about anything)

  • Set up Tune Warm up Make a plan Go do it!
  • Set up What to bring to rehearsal. Come prepared! Instrument Stand Score and your part Pencil Metronome Bluetooth speaker (optional) Good attitude (not optional)
  • Tune. Do not rush this process! Start from the bottom up One player at a time Test with each other
  • Warm up. Get in the zone. Become one sound instead of individual players Intonation & articulation Play a section of your piece slowly Play a scale together and match sounds
  • Make a plan. Don't wing it. That's a waste of time. Decide to group what you need most. Intonation Articulation Character/storyline Tempo Musical line Performance presentation
  • How to rehearse Gotta have a plan! Stick to the plan Rehearse in small chunks Experiment and keep an open mind Be critical but in a productive way
