Now in its 5th year, The Franklin Pond Chamber Music Competition is open to middle and high school students throughout the state of Georgia. Preliminary rounds are submitted via video, and the final round is held live before an independent panel of distinguished judges. Competition winners receive cash prizes as well the opportunity to perform before a live audience at the Awards Concert.

There are two divisions in the Competition, Middle School and High School, as well as a School Prize category, awarded to one group (middle or high school) whose members attend the same school. Grand Prize winners and runners up are chosen in each division; a third place prize is awarded at the discretion of the judges.

High School Grand Prize: $2000
High School Second Place Prize: $1200
Third Place prizes will be awarded at the judges’ discretion

Middle School Grand Prize: $1000
Middle School Second Place Prize: $500
Third Place prizes will be awarded at the judges’ discretion

School Prize: $1000

Eligibility

All Divisions

  • Chamber groups can be comprised of 3 to 8 musicians.
  • Groups can include any instrumentation as long as the majority are string instruments (piano and harp are considered string instruments for the purposes of this Competition).
  • No musician can compete in more than ONE group.

High School Division – $2000 Grand Prize

  • Any current resident of the state of Georgia is eligible
  • The majority of the group’s musicians must currently be in 9-12th grade
  • If a group is split evenly between middle and high school students, the group shall enter the High School Division.

Middle School Division – $1000 Grand Prize

  • Any current resident of the state of Georgia is eligible
  • The majority of the group’s musicians must currently be in 6-8th grade
  • If a group is split evenly between middle and high school students, the group shall enter the High School Division.

School Division – $1000 Prize

  • Group must be comprised of players who all attend the same school (an accredited Georgia public or private school)
  • Prize money will be split between the performers and the school booster association/orchestra director

Entry forms and Preliminary Round videos are due on April 15. The Final Round is held Memorial Day weekend (last full weekend in May), though the exact day may change from year to year. Students accepted into the final round should keep Friday afternoon through Sunday evening free until details are sent to them by Franklin Pond. The Awards Concert is held at 4:00 PM on the same day as the Final Round of the Competition.
