Student wins ASO Composition Contest!

382362_465394396875038_1017773322_nFranklin Pond student, cellist and composer, Mason Johnston has just won the 2014 Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Next Generation Student Composition Contest.  Inspired by the moon, his new piece, Dominus, will be performed on the Atlanta Symphony’s Concert for Young People called Space: Music of the Universe, conducted by Assistant Conductor Joseph Young. About 10,150 local students will attend these concerts and hear this brand new composition.  Despite a record number of high-quality contest submissions, this year’s winning composition was selected unanimously by the judges.
Mason, a rising sophomore at Grady High School, is currently attending Franklin Pond for his third year.  All the students and faculty of the Summer program are now at Berry College on a 4-day retreat.  Mason had a good day July 2nd.  His newly-composed-and-still-in-progress string quartet was read by the Franklin Pond Quartet in the morning, then he got the news about his great success with “Dominus”.  We couldn’t be more proud of Mason and continue to admire his musicianship and creativity.  BRAVO MASON!
